Beyond STAR: Crafting Impactful Leadership Narratives
🌟 STAR is Situation, Task, Action, Result. 🌟 It's a framework that helps people describe a problem and a resolution. (There are many of these - CAR, PAR...) But for executive résumés, I think STAR can be dry and 'not enough' - you want your leadership style to come shining through, not bore the reader to tears. And sometimes people need better questions to come up with better answers.
So here's what I do instead.
I ask people to tell me how they
1) Identified the problem
2) What hurdles they overcame
3) What the impact was
These questions help you
1) Show your critical, proactive thinking and expertise in your industry (the ability to 'see around corners' as it's often described) 🎯
2) Communicate how you get consensus, use leverage and influence, move teams in the right direction - how you delegate and evaluate to leap over hurdles and iterate to get to the finish line 🙌
3) Identify your value - your impact to the organization whether that's in revenue growth, profits, cost savings, efficiency, customer acquisition, new products etc. How does your work directly impact the bottom line? 💰
I get much better answers with these more open-ended, focused questions.
It really helps to get to what is unique about each person, which is my favorite part of what I do.
Next time you need to update your résumé, think about your projects and goals in terms of the questions above ☝ and see if you get a more unique, personalized view of your leadership and expertise.
You deserve it!
