Navigating the Dos and Don'ts of Personal Comments in Work and Life

A great rule of thumb in work and in life is to avoid commenting on someone's physical appearance. It's SO different than what I grew up doing/learning (especially in the Southern U.S. I think) but we've learned and moved on from that. Haven't we? What have we learned?

😨 People may have lost weight from being ill or depressed. Don't comment on weight loss.
😨 It just generally makes many people uncomfortable.
😨 It's not okay to comment on men's appearance either.
😨 For pity's sake don't ever ask about a pregnancy. Ever!
😨 This includes hair comments.

What did I miss? Do you generally agree or disagree? Am I being too sensitive or serious? (I don't think so.)

Of course we make exceptions for romantic relationships. That's part of why it's awkward otherwise.

I do often tell people "I love your shirt" or "great shoes" - to me that's about personal style and decision making (and I also love getting compliments on these).
