Embracing Proactive Career Communication
What does it mean to be ready for your next opportunity?
I had a great conversation with a CEO recently, who was referred to be by a former client. The client noticed that the CEO’s resume didn’t speak as strongly about her as it could, so she reached out to learn more about me and my services.
The CEO said to me, I’ve always been recruited, I’ve never had to apply for jobs across a 30 year career, and it’s worked well for me.
And I said, then you probably don’t need me.
The last thing I want to do is work with people who don’t need the work - who are able to get into “the rooms where it happens” because they have a natural ability to talk about their strengths and value and they know how to leverage their network to get those opportunities.
But there’s value in this work, even for people who’ve been really successful without this kind of career support.
We had a great conversation - she’s clearly a phenomenal leader - and I told her two things:
1. People who pass off your resume may not speak as eloquently as you do about your strengths and value. So having a concise document that clearly identifies those traits can help open doors you may not even be aware of, because they’re beyond your network.
2. We are just beginning to see the power of LinkedIn and what huge personal and organizational goals can be accomplished here.
It is by far the best social media platform for making career connections, and a strong profile + a bit of networking still reap enormous benefits.
Remember, only 1% of LinkedIn’s 700M users post, so you have an enormous organic opportunity to show up as an expert in your space and for your organization to show up as an industry leader.
Being ready for your next opportunity means proactively communicating about yourself so that those doors open.
This is why I love working with leaders to help them refine their understanding of their value and communicate it strongly and transparently on their resume and on LinkedIn.
And I especially love working with women leaders, who are 80% of my clients and who we need more of.
