How to Discuss Salary Expectations Early with Recruiters: A Guide for Executive Candidates

It's absolutely okay to bring up the salary range early on in a discussion with a recruiter if the range isn't listed. 💸

It can feel awkward, but we need to work towards making it unemotional.

Your work has value. 💰

Your time also has value, and there's no point going through initial calls with a recruiter if your salary expectations aren't aligned.

Here are some easy ways to bring up your salary expectations, if you aren't asked about it:

Direct Approach:

You: "I'm very interested in this position, and I'd like to know more about the salary range. Could you provide me with some information about what it looks like for this role?"

Indirect Approach:

You: "I understand that salary ranges can vary in this role. Can you provide some insights into the typical salary range for this role within your organization?"

Experience-based Approach: (I recommend this for slightly later in the process.)

You: "Given my experience and qualifications, I want to ensure that any potential offer aligns with my expectations. Could we discuss the salary range for this position and how my skills and experience might fit into that range?"

Then, an answer, based on their response:

Salary range aligns with your target

You: "Great, I'm comfortable with that range."

Salary range doesn't align with your target

You: "Unfortunately, I'm looking beyond that range." (Wait for them to respond.)

They don't know the range or can't say.

You: "I understand. Unfortunately, I can't move forward in the process (or, commit more time to interviews) until I know the salary range."
