How to Successfully Navigate a Mid-Career Pivot and Position Yourself for Success
Are you thinking about a mid-career pivot right now? If you are, you're not alone.
So many people start to consider branching out or taking their strengths in a new direction in the New Year.
What does a career pivot mean to you? I often help people pivot but it means different things to different people.
To me, overall it means taking a piece of what you do - your favorite piece hopefully - and angling it towards another industry or role.
Career pivots are great and not impossible - but you've got to do the research first to figure out the possibilities and what they would mean for your career - meaning changes in salary, job title, career trajectory, work/life balance, etc.
Here are a few ideas to get you started with a career pivot. First up: gather more info about potential changes. Need more help? Working with a career coach is a great idea and can save you some time. DM me for a referral.
➕ LinkedIn has made it easier than ever to find people with the job title, role, or in the industries that you're considering for a pivot. Find 1st and 2nd connections who are in these roles by searching your network. Reach out with a polite request to learn more with specific questions or by asking for a 15-minute chat. A warm intro from a friend or colleague can really help. (It's harder to say no to.)
➕ Check out LinkedIn for Learning and take some courses that build skills in the area you want to move into. 1) You can then list these skills and 2) you never know who you'll meet through the course.
➕ If you want to make a 180 change but don't know exactly what you want to do, ask friends, family and colleagues what they could see you doing. Think about your hobbies and whether you could turn these into a full-time role. Think back to your childhood and what you wanted to be then. How can you get closer to that?
And remember, exploring is just that. Exploring. You don't have to commit to anything until you're ready (and until your résumé is targeted to the pivot).
