5 Common Mistakes That Could Be Hurting Your Job Search and How to Fix Them

5 small things that may be drastically hurting your job search

It's awful to feel like everything has to be 'perfect' in this job market to move ahead. But sometimes small things can have an outsized effect. Here are a few problems I regularly see that may be hurting your job search, and how to fix them.

🚫Your name on your email, résumé, and LinkedIn profile don't match.

🎯Make it easy for recruiters to know you're the same person. In Gmail, the name you have attached to your email address shows up first - it should match your résumé and LinkedIn profile.

🚫Your résumé reads like a job description.

🎯Read your professional sections and if they could be about anyone, you need to add some specifics. What did YOU do - what is ONE project/hurdle you overcame/process improvement you made that impacted the organization? What was the impact?

🚫You don't have a title under your name on your résumé.

🎯Just like on LinkedIn, a headline on your résumé helps to share your brand immediately - it's powerful and concise, and can be tweaked for each role.

🚫Your résumé is in a Serif font.

🎯At this point, a Serif font like Times New Roman or Garamond really ages you. Use a Sans Serif font like Arial, Aptos, or Calibri. Or Helvetica for you wild ones ;)

🚫You don't follow up on applications.

🎯Every single client I've worked with has had more success applying to fewer roles, with targeted applications, and following up on those roles by finding someone to connect with. Yes, it's harder, but it yields much greater/faster results.
