What to Do Before and After a Layoff

It's disheartening to see so many layoffs. It's worse to be laid off.

What should you do if you're concerned about a layoff and in the immediate aftermath?

➡ 1) If you haven't updated your résumé recently and you need final project numbers for impact - like sales, revenue, cost reduction, audience growth, etc., try to identify someone who can help you pull those together prior to leaving.

If you're a leader or manager, protect your people by ensuring this info is available.

➡ 2) Share non-work email or connect on LinkedIn with colleagues.

➡ 3) Ask for LinkedIn recommendations from colleagues, clients (if that's okay where you work), external partners, and supervisors if possible.

In the event of a layoff - take a deep breath and slow down the process (even in your own brain.)

➡ 4) Severance can be negotiated. Ask for more. Ask for outplacement services or funds to cover help with an updated résumé, LinkedIn profile, and job search strategy.

➡ 5) Get ahold of your emotions before posting on social media. The internet is forever and your next employer will see it.
